Can lexapro really stop panic attacks?
I have been having really bad panic attacks lately and I visited my doctor and she put me on Lexapro. I just want to make sure that she knows what she is doing. Does lexapro really help to get rid of panic attacks?
Also how long does it usually take for lexapro to work?
Lexapro is an anti-depressant, but it’s also used for generalized anxiety disorder. In the majority of cases, there has been some relief within 1-2 weeks of beginning. Major relief occurred for most cases within 3-4 weeks.

I had major panic disorder 15 years (or so) ago. I was very against using medication to control the problem. That in itself made me panic! I gave in and tried anti-depressant (I can’t remember the name) for a couple of months, while I saw a psychologist. The psychiatrist reasoned that medications weren’t the answer for me. Took a good year for me to accept and deal with my fears.

Lexapro is an antidepressant so your doctor probably thought that was the problem. Otherwise they would have given you a specifically anxiety based medicine. The problem with those is they’re addictive.

It will take weeks for it to become effective, but it can help. Just remember that all anti-depressants affect people in different ways and what works for one, may not work for another.
Takes about 3-5 weeks to kick in for me.
